Late in the 15th Century a gambler, Felix Falguiere, created a card game based on the partition of the numbers. The game was called Baccarat. Fate, and your hand, determines the winner. One of the attractions of this game is its’ simplicity.

In this game, you tally the value of your hand and the hand of the banker. The hand closest to 9 wins. If the points are zero that is Baccarat. Hands always range between 0 and 9.

Once a game of the French Elite, this game has now become popular with the masses. If you would like to play Baccarat, read on to learn the Baccarat rules.

The Baccarat Rules You Need Know

In Baccarat, there are 6-8 decks of cards in a shoe. Bets are placed before the dealer deals. You can bet on the banker side, or the player side, or both for a tie.

Two cards are dealt to the player and 2 cards are dealt to the dealer. The cards are placed face-up on the table. The hand closest to 9 wins.

How to Tally Your Hand

The number cards equal their face value, except 10 which counts as a 0. The King, Queen, and Jack are also worth 0, the Ace is worth 1. When the cards total more than 9, like when a 9 and 6 cards are played, you add them and drop the first digit. In this example, 9+6=15, drop the 1 and the hand is worth 5.

The Winnings

The payouts differ by your bet. If you bet on the banker, you get 95% of your bet. If you bet on the player, you get double your bet. If there is a tie, then the payout is 8 to 1.

If this feels a little complex, don’t worry most tables have score sheets to help you sort it out. The same is true for online games.

Additional Rules

As with most games, there are a few additional rules you need to know.

  1. If the banker gets an 8 and the player gets a 9, then both stand (no one wins).
  2. Players always stand on 6,7,8, or 9.
  3. When the player gets a 5 or less you can stand or have another card drawn for the player. If the player stands, then the banker draws another card if they also have 5 or less.

There are other versions of Baccarat that exist. These are Punto Banco, Chemin de Fer. The rules for these are slightly different so make sure you do your research on these before you play.
