Bronx native, Capella Grey, born Curtis Jackson II, 25, is way more than a one-hit wonder, who came out of no where. In fact, his biggest hit is actually just a teaser buzz single he released at the top of the year, just for the fun of it.  He remains quite a bit of a mystery, with popularity growing and his social media following developing; he’s keeping the focus on his music.

Already a successful songwriter and producer with credits dating back to 2017.  Some of his work seems to be uncredited, but his biggest hit appears to be “Love You Better” by King Combs featuring Chris Brown. Capella is also a well trained musician, telling Vice, that he can play the organ, drums, bass, guitar and piano.

So when Capella Grey turned to making his own songs in 2019, it came pretty much effortlessly.  In January of 2020 he released his debut project, Yea Nah I’m Out.  It’s an R&B project with a real New York City vibe, almost in the same way DJ Webstar and Young B jumped on the scene in the early 2000s.  Capella followed up the project with The QuaranTape Vibe 1, which he released in April 2020, in the early days of the pandemic.  Similar to the first project, it was just a bit more polished.  Still, it featured several artists connected to Capella.  Both projects were released under his Allepac Family label.

He dropped one more single in June of 2020, his most commercial song yet, titled, “One More Chance.”  He let it build a buzz until the end of the year as he continued to work on his songwriting credits and his producing behind the scenes.

Then, in January, he decided to try something different.  He tapped into his Caribbean roots to release “Gyalis” on January 4th and then just a few weeks later, he released “Sas Crise” featuring Alayzha Sky & Ghost.

It took a few weeks for the buzz to build, but the song was simply undeniable.  The sample, the melodic groove, the way he skates on the beat.  “Gyalis” was an absolute banger!  Here we are, more than halfway through the year, and it’s still one of the biggest songs to drop this year and the biggest thing out of New York since Pop Smoke made his debut.

Gyalis is a patois term, meaning a promiscuous man, who obsessively seduces and deceives women.

The song, which is written and produced by Capella Grey, prompted a deal with Capitol Records/Universal Music Group and a re-release of the track for the Summer, with new artwork. For that reason the song was removed from streaming services for a short time.

“Gyalis” has since been unofficially remixed by French Montana, A Boogie With The Hoodie, Kranium and several other artists.  He’s been featured on New York radio with many calling this the song of the Summer and even the song of the year.  Still, as of this writing he isn’t even officially listed as an artist on the Capitol Records website and has no official bio.

Capella Grey has since released the remix to “Gyalis” with Chris Brown and Popcaan. The radio friendly hit has only increased his rise.

He’s teamed up with Dream Doll to release “You Know My Body”, a buzzing single for her, a fellow Bronx native.

Capella also teamed up with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, yet another BX native, for “Bestie”.  The song is featured on the Kawhi Leonard created Culture Jam project.

Capella has been teasing his official second single, “Talk Nice” for months on social media.
