Are birthday gifts mandatory for close friends?
This topic has been controversial for quite some time now, and the people of the bird app have their unfiltered opinions on it.
Recently, a user by the name of @__ceemee took to her Twitter account to share her two cents on the subject of attending a birthday party empty-handed.
“We too old not to be buying BIRTHDAY GIFTS for OUR FRIENDS … if you show up to your friends function without a gift then you need to turn around,” she wrote in the now-viral tweet. “Maybe it’s me but I was raised not to come empty handed to someone’s functions, especially a birthday function.”

She further explained her point by elaborating on what she felt like was/wasn’t acceptable.
I’m not saying buy an expensive ass gift. A simple card, balloon, cake, money or thoughtful gift could be enough. It’s the thought that counts. Some ppl don’t life gifts or don’t know how to accept them and that’s fine too. This is all based on the person and their preference

I’m just saying if I know my friend loves flowers and I can’t afford to get her a purse that she wants, as my friend I know she would love the flowers just as much. It’s not about how expensive the gift is or how many you get, but to each it’s own!

While some refuted her statement by giving their own reasons as to why their presence is worth more than a present, others agreed that it was the disrespect for them!
A few blamed their lack of need to buy a gift on regional traditions, more blamed it on the fact that some people just simply don’t know how to be a good friend.
Take a look at what they had to say in the replies…

Shit not that deep ppl got families to feel bills to pay some ppl going thru tough times rn be easy bout it. If they willing to put aside time to come celebrate that should be enough if that’s REALLY your friend js.

I don’t have time to hang so it hard getting a personalized gift that centered around their interest so I usually just give em bread
— Yak 🇭🇹 (@Yakjtv) July 30, 2022
you can also just take them out to dinner and pay for their food. I do that if I don’t get a gift, some people are hard to shop for

Some people will argue that their presence is what’s important but for me that’s just a nonsense excuse
— NDA (@Ndapunikw) July 30, 2022
I disagree! I’d much rather have my people with me than a gift. Materialistic stuff fades—relationships are of much greater value.

I guess I need new friends 🥺😂😂😂

Adults are hard to buy for. Especially if you hate clutter and suspect they might as well. The last birthday celebration I went to we tried on dresses from my closet and I gifted her the one she liked (I’d never worn it). But usually my circle just goes to the shindig.

Ppl will then not show up and just offer a gift instead 😭😭
— shanice. (@sxp_hia) July 30, 2022
Agreed! My friends deserve it all!!! If I can do it for my man, why can’t I do it for my girls!?

Not everyone likes receiving gifts though…

I’ll pay for their food. It is not that deep. Literally showing up and celebrating their life with them is the gift

So I see both sides with not bringing a gift and with bringing a gift and pretty its alot but I might be tripping and over thinking..maybe? But bringing a gift would be nice and is a great gesture, if the bday person asks for such and such or alludes to it then yeah probably-

Let’s normalize letting people care about shit by themselves… imagine being in this friend group n someone says this shit 😂 take a bday trip with your friends and get a few drinks on the friends etc..‘no adults give a damn about all friends giving a gift grow up
