21 Savage pushes Anti-Gun stance, defends his violent lyrics in a couple of social media posts.

On Monday, 21 Savage took to Twitter to speak to his followers in Atlanta.  He urged them  to “do better” in response to the violence in the city. “Atlanta, We Have To Do Better Put The F****** Guns Down!”

Someone then replied with a GIF of a man looking confused. He also added  some of the lyrics from the Billboard chart-topping song “Jimmy Cooks” featuring Drake in the caption. They wrote, “Spin the block twice like there ain’t nowhere to park” pointing out the violent nature of 21’s song.

The 29 year old rapper did not ignore this. He replied. “A Song Is For Entertainment It’s Not An Instruction Manual On How To Live Life In Real Life. I Give Away A lot Of Money And Spread Financial Literacy To My Community. Stop Trying To Make Me 1 Dimensional.”

While the user above made a discreet rebuff, other commenters were more direct; calling the rapper a “hypocrite” for the post.

This complaint comes just 24 hours after 21 Savage hosted a back-to-school drive in DeKalb County Georgia. After the event, he was praised by the commissioner for District 5 Mereda Davis Johnson.

She wrote on Twitter “It’s always great to be with @21savage each year for his Annual Back To School Giveaway in DeKalb! For 7 years, he has put on this amazing event providing school supplies for our precious youth! Keep up the great work.”

The attack on 21 also comes at a time where the use of rap lyrics as evidence in criminal cases has been a prevalent issue. In June, Kevin Liles and Julie Greenwald launched a petition labelled “Rap Music on Trial: Protect Black Art”. It  focused on how prosecutors have continuously attempted the use of rap lyrics in the courtroom.

The petition set an instance on how Young Thug, Gunna and their Young Stoner Life (YSL) have fallen victim to this tactic during their ongoing RICO case.

300 Entertainment’s, Liles and Atlantic’s COO’s, Greenwald explained in a joint statement. “Weaponizing creative expressions against artists is obviously wrong. But what gets us so upset is what’s happening to Young Thug, Gunna, and YSL is just the most high-profile case”

They want people to understand that what artists create are just for entertainment purposes and might not have any relation with their beliefs or activities in real life.
