Dwynade Wade, took a legal step to support his transgender daughter Zaya. He legally filed to change both her name and gender in a court in California. The official Zaya Wade change of name would be the logical next step for the 15 year old.
The 40 year old former NBA player filed the court papers for the change in name and gender of his and his ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches’s daughter on Thursday 18th of August 2022. In the petition, Dwayne asked for the 15 year old to be allowed to officially change her name . The change is from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade.
In addition, Dwyane Wade is seeking for the courts approval to legally issue a decree that recognizes that the minor’s gender has changed to “female.” He specifically cited the reason for the change as “to conform with gender identity.”
The father-of-four made sure to note that he has “full authority” to decide on behalf of the “petitioning minor” and does not need the permission of Zaya’s mother as per their custody arrangement for the Zaya Wade change of name and gender.
“Pursuant to the term of Final Custody Judgement, (Wade) has full authority to make decisions on behalf of the petitioning minor, and he is not required to receive consent from Ms. Funches-Wade. As a courtesy, Ms. Funches-Wade has received notice of this “petition” the document reads, as per the outlet.
Dwyane and Siohvaughn were previously married from 2002 to 2010 and had two kids together: Zaya and Zaire Wade.
The court filing comes out two years after Dwyane publicly revealed that Zaya came out to her parents as transgender. Back in 2020, Dwyane appeared as a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss the heartfelt moment when Zaya asked Dwyane and her step mother Gabrielle Union, 49, to call her by her new name. Dwyane claimed to be a proud LGBTQ+ parent and ally. He also explained that they took their “roles and responsibility as parents very seriously.”
