Who is Asake? That was the question on everyone’s lips at the beginning of 2022. But now, in the ninth month of the year, everyone is a fan of Asake and can’t seem to get enough of him.

Ahmed Olalode Asake, professionally known as Asake, was born on the 13th of January 1995 in a muslim Yoruba family in Nigeria. He took everyone by storm when he released hit songs like “Omo Ope” and “Sungba.”

“Omo Ope” was an instant hit but “Sungba” was a trail blazer with any and every social media video using it as it’s soundtrack. He went on to make an even more successful remix of “Sungba” with Nigerian Grammy winner, Burna Boy. This put Asake on everyone’s radar.

As the year progressed, the Sungba singer didn’t slow down. Instead he released a string of even more successful songs such as “Palazzo” and “Peace be unto you”, all releases from his eponymously EP titled Olalode.

He collaborated with his label mate, Fireboy, the singer behind the hit song “Peru” and together they made “Bandana.”

On September 8th, 2022 Asake released his debut album titled Mr. Money With The Vibe. With 12 tracks, the album was met with universal acclaim from fans all over the world. Songs from the album has occupied the first ten entries of Apple music’s Nigerian chart. Mr. Money With The Vibe debuted at number 66 on Billboard’s 200 album chart. Although other huge Nigerian stars like Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido have featured on this same chart in the past, he breaks the record as the first Nigerian to have his debut album to break into the chart. On the Billboard World album chart he debuted at an impressive number 7. In the United Kingdom,  his album debuted at number 22 on the UK official albums chart.

Asake Before the Fame

Asake’s fame is growing internationally at a rapid rate but he hasn’t always had it this easy. Once upon a time he was just a budding musician trying to gain some grounds while being a student at Obafemi Awolowo university, Nigeria. A student of Theatre Arts, he spent his days in school exploring music. Although he admits to having demoralizing days before his breakthrough, he continued to believe in himself because he knew he had what it takes.

Since 2020, Asake had been sending DMs to acclaimed Nigerian rapper and record label executive Olamide to sign him to his label YBNL. Asake finally got a response in 2022. That response gave him his first massive hit as well as a record deal with YBNL. As of July, he has a distribution deal with Empire (in America), home to other artists like Iggy Azalea and Kendrick Lamar.

When asked about why he uses a female Yoruba name as a stage name ,he explained that its his mother’s name and he picked her name to pay homage to her for her continuous support.

Asake is on his way to start his Mr. Money With The Vibe, United States tour. From September 22nd, he will be performing in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Washington DC, Baltimore and New York.
