The cast of Mindy Kaling’s Velma series is finally here and guess who’s playing the iconic Shaggy?
It’s Sam Richardson! The Mystery Inc gang is coming to life for this HBO Max series starring and created by Mindy Kaling. The adult animated series boasts a very diverse cast but the change that has people talking is Sam Richardson cast as Shaggy on the show. (real name -Norville).
Sam Richardson isn’t new to Hollywood . He is an acclaimed writer, comedian and American actor born in 1984. His impressive resume features both movies and series like Detroiters (2017-2018), Werewolves Within (2021), The After Party (2022-), Hocus Pocus 2(2022) and recently the Netflix movie Senior Year(2022).
Sam Richardson reacted to the casting news with a simple ‘zoinks’ which die hard scooby doo fans know is a one of shaggy’s catch phrases from the original series.

Sam Richardson as Shaggy isn’t the only change you should expect.The animated character also got a few style changes. As you can see in the picture below there near shaggy is black tall and has dreadlocks. His name in the show is also Norville which could be a strategy to try and separate the character from the original shaggy.
Other cast members include Glenn Howerton as Fred, Constance Wu as Daphne and Mindy Kaling as Velma. According to The Hollywood Reporter the entire cast was on on stage during the New York Comic Con.

In addition to Sam Richardson cast as Shaggy, other notable stars attached to this HBO Max series included Wanda Sykes, Russell Peters, Debby Ryan, Karl-Anthony Towns, Yvonne Orji, Shay Mitchell, Elissa Fumero, and Ming-Na Wen.
The adult animated series, Velma is set to debut in 2023 on HBO MAX.
