Hello music lovers! This one’s for you. Have you always loved listening to music, but never learned to play an instrument yourself? Or, do you already play an instrument, but you are looking for inspiration for which one to choose next? Well, you have come to the right place. We will provide a list of 6 fun instruments that you might not have thought of learning. Whether you are drawn to wind instruments, percussion, or strings, we have a suggestion just for you. But first, we will have a look at some of the main reasons why you should consider taking up a musical instrument.

Why Learn a Musical Instrument

There are a lot of benefits to learning to play a musical instrument. For one thing, it is a lot of fun! All music lovers will get a kick out of actually playing the songs they love so much on an instrument. Moreover, taking up an instrument is a great way to meet people and get involved in musical social groups.

You will also benefit your mental health and cognitive function by taking up a musical instrument. There are several advantages for brain health of listening to and making music. Music is associated with increased happiness, decreased stress, and improved brain networking functions. This is especially important as you age.

What’s more, there is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and pride that comes with mastering a new skill. If you have always wanted to learn an instrument, why not give it a go? The moment when you play your first tune, pass your first exam, or perform for the first time for an audience will stay with you forever.

So, let’s have a look at some fun instruments that you might want to start learning today.

1. Keytar

If you have a love for quirky instruments and want to try your hand at playing one, you should start with the keytar! The keytar instrument is like a keyboard that you play as a guitar. Anyone who has the desire to play the piano but with all the cool aesthetics of a guitar player will simply love the keytar. As the keyboard portion is relatively short, it is easier to learn to play a tune on this instrument than on a full-scale piano.

If you want to stand out from the crowd, the keytar will give you a unique selling point that others around you just don’t have.

2. Harmonica

A great option for adults learning to play an instrument is the harmonica. Not only is it relatively easy to make a lovely sound with a harmonica, but it also fits perfectly into your pocket or purse. The harmonica is a great instrument for playing around a campfire or joining in jam sessions without having to spend hours learning how to play a more complex instrument or read music sheets. In fact, the harmonica is considered to be one of the easiest instruments to learn for adults.

Always wanted to play the opening bars of the Beatles’ famous song ‘Love Me Do’? A couple of hours of practice on the harmonica and you’ll nail it!

3. Ukulele

Generally speaking, anyone who can play another string instrument like the guitar or banjo can play the ukulele. If this is your first venture into string instruments, the ukulele is a great place to start, as it has just four strings, and with just a few chords you can play any number of pop songs. Famous artists who dabble with the ukulele include Taylor Swift and George Harrison.

Join these greats and try out the ukulele today. This is a great instrument to learn quickly and impress with, as you will probably be able to play a tune within your first lesson on the ukulele.

4. Bongo Drums

Another relatively easy instrument to get a great sound out of is the bongo drum set. That being said, when you hear the bongo drums being played well, it is an elating experience. This Afro-Cuban percussion instrument consists of a pair of open-bottom drums of different sizes that are struck with both hands. Bongo drums are a great addition to music circles and for this reason, they are a very social instrument to play.

If you love the idea of playing percussion instruments with other people, you should look to see if there is a drum circle in your area. These are great creative spaces to share the love of music and dance with other like-minded players.

Recently made a hot topic on pop culture websites by global superstar Lizzo, the flute is a super fun kind of instrument to start playing. This family of instruments is of the woodwind group and they make a classical and ethereal sound. There are different kinds of flutes that make different sounds and have varying structures. So, have a look online and see if one style, in particular, speaks to you.

This instrument notoriously takes some time to master, but once you do, you’ll be the talk of the town. Nothing sounds quite like the bagpipe, and you will be joining an elite community of people who can play this instrument well.
