On Saturday (Feb. 25) at the 54th NAACP Image Awards, Angela Bassett took home the award for Entertainer of the Year and during her acceptance speech she referenced Ariana DeBose’s performance that went viral after her BAFTA tribute.
After taking the stage to accept the accolade, the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and 9-1-1 actress joked that she “did the thing,” which is what DeBose said while rapping at the BAFTAs.
At the ceremony, Bassett also took home ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture’ and ‘Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series,’ adding on to the other NAACP Image Awards she’s won during her illustrious career.
“I guess Angela Bassett did the thing,” the actress quipped.
In a prior acceptance speech acknowledging her character portrayal in 9-1-1, Bassett gave thanks to Ryan Murphy (the creator of the show) for his imaginativeness along with co-staff related to the series.

Angela Bassett Mentions Ariana DeBose’s Performance In NAACP Awards Speech
On Sunday (Feb. 19), Ariana DeBose set social media on fire after her extremely interesting rap performance at the BAFTAs.
As she commemorated the ladies nominated this year for a BAFTA (Viola Davis, Ana De Armas, Cate Blanchett, etc.), Debose remixed “Vogue” (1990) by Madonna by adding some Hip-Hop flavor to her stage act.
Her rap segment didn’t seem to hit home with various Royal Festival Hall audience members, as when the camera panned around many nominees appeared distraught and stupefied.
Naturally, the taped reactions led social media to lampoon the American actress for her Hip-Hop presentation. DeBose deactivated her Twitter account shortly after.
