Leigh-Anne Pinnock narrating The Little Mermaid is probably the best news we’ve heard all year!

Audible has produced a brand-new audiobook adaptation of The Little Mermaid, and the Little Mix songstress serves as the voice behind it.

Originally written by Hans Christian Andersen, the endeavor is a modern-day version of the iconic fairy tale by author Dina Gregory, which has been released just in time for Disney’s upcoming live-action depiction of the story.

The synopsis reads, “The plot of the first animated version, which came out in 1989, centers on a young mermaid named Ariel who falls in love with the human prince Eric and wishes she may one day live on land.”

Joining Pinnock (who’s slated to incorporate some of her own personal life experiences into the plot) are cameos from artists anaiis, Kersha Bailey, Sairah Rowe, and Nadine Samuel.

When speaking of the opportunity, Pinnock shared, “There are so many themes within this now iconic storyline that feel so familiar to my own life and so my narration was inspired by not only my experiences but also my culture, my heritage. My hope is that people like myself can see themselves in this story too and I’ve enjoyed retelling this tale to my own children already.”

As reported by Deadline, writer Gregory expressed, “In the popular imagination, The Little Mermaid has morphed into a happy-ever-after fairy-tale despite the original story’s darker ending. Never destined to marry the prince, this voiceless outsider is forsaken by a world that deems her ‘other.’”

The Little Mermaid narration only adds to singer-actress Pinnock’s list of recent accomplishments. The 31-year-old made her acting debut in 2021 in the film Boxing Day.

The audiobook series debuted on Audible on March 23, months before the flick starring Halle Bailey will hit theaters on May 26.
