Is American Idol the root of every issue the U.S. is currently facing? Well, Whoopi Goldberg undoubtedly believes it contributed significantly to “the downfall of society.”

On May 24, as Goldberg and her co-hosts were chatting about the latest Anna Nicole Smith documentary on Netflix, the subject came up.

According to the EGOT recipient, fans continue to view this type of television because “people like to be judgy.”

“You have Basketball Wives, you have the Housewives of whatever, all the Bravo shows, giving you the impression that you’re doing something wrong because you’re living your life,” Goldberg expressed.

“People watch these shows because they make them feel better… I think that we, as a society, love to watch stuff to judge folks.”

Then Goldberg gave her explanation for how and when this all started. She turned to executive producer Brian Teta, with whom it appeared she had previously discussed this, and said, “You know, I’ve always thought that the beginning of the downfall of society was with, um, what’s the name of that show? I tell you that always.”

“American Idol on ABC?” Teta retorted, poking fun at Whoopi Goldberg’s ignorance by pointing out that American Idol presently airs on the same network as The View.

Before stating her theory, Goldberg smiled and said, “Well, it wasn’t always on ABC. I believe we went awry with it once we gave people the opportunity to criticize other people. And things have gotten out of hand.”

“They invited the public to decide who their person was. And I feel once we did that, it began us in a cycle which we have not — did you really just do that?” she furthered.

The “Ghost” actress might blame American Idol for making society more faultfinding, but in 2020, she participated in two episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race and has since served as a guest judge on that program.

Iam Tongi, a native of Hawaii, won American Idol’s 21st season, which recently came to an end.
