Shaquille O’Neal Opens Up About Huge Weight Loss Journey
NBA legend Shaq has been getting serious about his fitness. He recently told Entertainment Tonight that he lost 55 pounds to get to 351–just six pounds than he said to have weighed when he helped lead the LA Lakers to the NBA title in 2000.
“I was getting chubby and couldn’t even walk up the stairs, I didn’t like the way I looked in the mirror,” he told ET . “I was like ‘I’m gonna lose 20’ and then I was trying to lose 20.”
Shaq’s weight loss journey reportedly began in December 2022, when he did a routine medical checkup which prompted him to make changes in his diet.
“I got a couple [of] people involved — it’s all about eating right…A friend of mine called me and said, ‘You’re fat,’ and she gave me this guy’s name, and he did some blood work, and you know, ’cause I was the athlete — I wasn’t a salad eater.”
The athlete continued, admitting that he didn’t know the difference between a carb and a protein.
“I won’t pay attention to any of that, I don’t care about none of that. I didn’t know what the difference between a carb and a protein, at 50 years old I never knew. So, he was saying you can’t do this, you can’t do that, more vegetables, my iron’s low,” he added.
Thankfully, Shaq shared that he has now shed 55 lbs however, he has a lot more to accomplish along his weight loss journey.
“I’m probably gonna get between 315 and 330,” he said.
The NBA icon additionally offered advice to others who need motivation to get back in shape.
“Start off, if you can, by walking 30 minutes a day. A lot of people can’t do that because … you got the kids, you’ve got to get to work. But if you can, start off by walking 30 minutes a day…Put your headphones on, put on your favorite song, 30 minutes a day,” he said.
