SZA recently opened up about her “painful” experience with breast implants, which she had gotten earlier in her career. Eventually, the singer shared, she had them removed after finding out she was at a higher risk for breast cancer.

SZA went into detail about her decision during a sit-down with the S.H.E. MD podcast, revealing that she developed fibrosis after her breast augmentation. According to the American Lung Association, fibrosis is described as “thickening or scarring of the tissue.”

“When I got my boobs done, my doctor took out some of my fibrosis, but…there was so much fibrosis, it was crazy,” the “Snooze” artist told S.H.E. MD hosts Mary Alice Haney and Dr. Thais Aliabadi. “He took it out. And so, when I went back, a lot of the concerns were gone.”

She additionally explained that her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and her aunt received a mastectomy. As such, SZA learned that she has a 53 percent lifetime risk of developing the deadly disease due to her family history. However, her chances had been reduced to “27 percent” after getting the implants removed, Dr. Thais Aliabadi–a world-renowned OBGYN –said.

“I like seeing somebody spiritual about it, specifically the breast cancer situation and the marker before I had the results of the biopsy and all that, I had talked to somebody, because I was like, ‘I got to figure out what’s going on in the higher realms.’” SZA shared.

The 34-year-old even revealed that despite the risk of developing breast cancer, she still “snuck and got [the implants] anyways.”

“I have markers in my breast, like metal markers in my breast for these fibrosis, for these lumps or whatever, I’m not supposed to be getting breast implants. So basically, I put them in. They ended up hurting me,” she said. “I have way too much scar tissue because my breasts are too dense, and I’m not supposed to have breast implants. And so I ended up getting extra fibrosis like with tissue, and I didn’t feel good and it was painful. So, I took them out, and now they’re just my boobs.”

Thankfully, SZA is currently maintaining her health as she definitely learned the hard way.
