It’s safe to say that when it comes to relationships, SZA prefers to turn her personal life into platinum listens! From sharing someone else’s man in her highly-acclaimed breakout single “The Weekend” to threatening her favorite ex on SOS track “Kill Bill,” SZA’s dating history seemingly lies within the music.

However, it wasn’t until the release of her debut studio album, CTRL, that the celebrated songstress started candidly putting her beyond-the-booth experiences into the pen. She said in a 2017 interview with The Breakfast Club, “I never really talked about, like, relationships in a direct way. I used to be very metaphorical, very figurative.” The St. Louis native continued: “And, also, just kind of scared, like, to talk about the way I felt in a literal way or like very directly.”

But… even with SZA’s semi-frank approach to writing and singing about love, there’s still a lot about her romantic endeavors left for assumption. Be it fellow celebrities that the 34-year-old has (allegedly) been linked to or ex-boos she’s only briefly spoken on, SZA’s list of reported old flames is pretty interesting.

Everything Suspected About SZA’s Dating History

That Time She Almost Got Married

According to a feature on Rolling Stone, she and the mystery man were together for a total of eleven years, with five of those spent gearing up for the altar. Sadly, the union ended before the then-lovebirds could walk down the aisle. SZA opened up about the unfortunate split in her song “Nobody Gets Me” from her sophomore full-length, SOS.

In the heartfelt melody, she sings, “Took me out to the ballet / You proposed, I went on the road / You was feelin’ empty, so you left me / Now I’m stuck dealin’ with a deadbeat / If I’m real, I deserve less / If I was you, I wouldn’t take me back / I pretend when I’m with a man, it’s you.”

The identity of SZA’s “almost” hubby hasn’t been made public… officially. However, people on the internet streets have speculated that it could be a man named Scott Sasso. As for what else we know about him? Well, in an interview with media personality Zane Lowe, SZA revealed that he’s a designer who financially supported her while she worked as a bartender. In fact, he was sort of the reason why she started making music.

“I really only did music to prove a point,” she told Lowe. “When I started making music, it was to [prove a point] to my ex-fiancé, because he was paying for everything. Like… my food, my clothes [laughs]… where I lived. And he was like eight years my senior. So, I was so co-dependent.”

She Even Kicked It with Drake for A While

Despite their recent bop “Rich Baby Daddy,” which also featured raptress Sexyy Red, Drake and SZA didn’t seem to make it to that stage of their past fling.

If you didn’t know, Drake mentioned his connection to the “Snooze” phenomenon in fellow lyricists 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s 2020 tune “Mr. Right Now.” He rhymed, “Said she wanna f*ck to some SZA, wait / ‘Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08 / If you cool with it, baby she can still play.”

SZA clarified the Canadian hitmaker’s verse by adding in a post to X (then Twitter): “So, it was actually 2009 [that we dated] lol.. in this case a year of poetic rap license mattered.. lol I think he jus innocently rhymed 08 [with] wait. Anybody who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm.”

She concluded, “I just didn’t want anybody thinking anything underage or creepy was happening. Completely innocent. Lifetimes ago.”

Her Strong Bond with Kehlani Led Many to Question

For quite a while now, fans have tried their hardest to pair singers SZA and Kehlani together. Aside from being seen walking hand-in-hand to Rihanna’s Met Gala afterparty in 2021, they’ve always had uber-sweet things to say about each other in the media.

For example, when SZA took to X to praise Kehlani for “making sure” she had “holy water” and “cascarilla” before she left home.

Although Kehlani is a proud lesbian (and SZA has slightly hinted at liking to hang around the lady pond), nothing has proved that the ladies are anything other than homegirls. During an interview with The Morning Hustle in 2022, Kehlani assured that their relationship had always been platonic, but of course, that’s still not enough to keep the internet’s opinions at bay.

When asked if SZA was her “type,” she replied, “She’s my type if I had a type. Yeah… I like beautiful people that are beautiful inside and out. So, she definitely fits.”

Ultimately, Kehlani ended by affirming that the two have only kept it friendly.

Travis Scott and SZA May (or May Not) Have Dated

SZA and rapper Travis Scott blew up the music scene with their 2017 collaboration “Love Galore” from SZA’s CTRL album… and again on SOS’ “Open Arms.”

All of these years later, their onstage chemistry is still undeniable–well, for #TeamTraZA, at least.

Neither has confirmed a relationship, of any sort, but the public has shipped them based on their ability to create magic together alone.
