Rapper Azealia Banks has never been one to mince her words. The “Liquorice” MC is known for her unapologetic personality and candid opinions, having made headlines as much for her music as for her public outbursts. Here’s a look at some of the most controversial moments that have defined Azealia’s career.

6. Azealia Banks clashed with Skai Jackson on Twitter.

Azealia Banks found herself in hot water on Twitter when she got into a heated argument with then-14-year-old Disney star Skai Jackson. The controversial moment happened when Skai criticized the rapper for her comments about Zayn Malik, leading to a series of aggressive and inappropriate tweets from Banks.

5. Azealia Banks went viral after her rant on ‘Wild ‘N’ Out.’

In 2018, Azealia Banks appeared on the comedy show Wild ‘n Out and claimed that the cast ambushed her with premeditated jokes about her appearance and music. Following her appearance on the show, the rapper responded with a homophobic rant that further alienated her. “I did Wild ‘N’ Out today. There were tons of pre-planned colorist jokes and, of course, crybaby cried,” she wrote on Instagram at the time (per The Daily Mail).

Azealia’s antics often get her into trouble. For example, in 2021, Azealia sent fans into a frenzy after she dug up her deceased cat and boiled it, per Daily Mail. The incident shocked and horrified many, leading to her removal from Instagram for violating its policies.

Additionally, she was banned from Instagram in 2022 after posting a series of disturbing messages on the platform. In the weeks leading up to the ban, Azealia levied attacks against Nicki Minaj, Latto, and Kanye West, according to UPROXX.

3. Azealia’s criticisms of Beyoncé weren’t well-received by the internet.

Few acts are beloved by almost everyone, and Beyoncé is one of those stars. However, in 2016, Azealia turned her ire towards one of the queens of the music industry for no apparent reason. At the time, Azealia accused the singer of being a hypocrite and pandering to Black culture for commercial gain. “She’s capitalizing on a national [conversation] without actually having to participate in the conversation,” Azealia tweeted (via Billboard).

2. Azealia Banks’ Twitter war with Zayn Malik wasn’t on our bingo card.

In 2016, Azealia launched a racially charged tirade against former One Direction member Zayn, accusing him of copying her style in his music video for “Like I Would.” The exchange quickly turned ugly, with Azealia using offensive language and racial slurs, per The Guardian. Azealia’s comments prompted the Born & Bred Festival in London to drop her as the headliner and the temporary suspension of her Twitter account.

1. Azealia Banks’ beef with Iggy Azalea ranks as her most controversial moment.

One of Azealia’s earliest and most controversial moments involved Australian rapper Iggy Azalea. In 2011, both rappers were still new to the hip-hop game. Their feud escalated with a series of scathing tweets and interviews, culminating in a heated exchange on social media, according to Billboard. During their beef, Azealia spewed several vile attacks at Iggy. She called the Australian native a “dishonest cracker.”
