Well, it looks like Severance season 2 is finally on the way!

Apple TV+ debuted the hit sci-fi thriller series Severance in February 2022. Created by Dan Erickson, the psychological project follows widower Mark Scout (portrayed by The Aviator’s Adam Scott), an employee at a biotechnology corporation called Lumon Industries. Supernaturally exploring the “work-life balance” theory, the company utilizes a medical procedure that surgically splits the employees’ memories between their personal and professional lives.

The experiment, which the show is named after, is divided into two sectors. During business hours, the individuals are dubbed “innies,” whose mental Rolodexes are wiped clean regarding anything about their world outside the establishment’s doors. However, when their shift ends, they’re now “outies,” who have no recollection of their time on the job.

Directed by Ben Stiller (Meet the Parents), season 1 of the (nearly) hour-long production had a successful run, and it received a renewal for a sophomore season in April 2022. Along with Scott, the debut saw Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, Michael Chernus, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette at the front of the cast.

Now, after much anticipation, the Emmy-winning Severance is finally on the brink of its return, but as for when? Well, the fans aren’t too happy about that.

When Will Severance Season 2 Premiere?

Two years after its initial release, details surrounding the long-awaited second installment have begun to surface. In January 2024, following its May 2023 halt, the crew announced that production for Severance had kicked off again. PEOPLE confirmed that they’d wrapped in April.

According to reports, filming was delayed due to the WGA (Writers Guild of America) and SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strikes ensued in Hollywood last year.

In early July, Apple TV+ unleashed a 30-second teaser and the official release date for Severance season 2, which won’t be until January 17, 2025. Of course, with the new, exciting information came a few impatient viewers. And… rightfully so.

“I need Severance to speed up their timeline and release a little sooner,” an X user named @Trippisfrank posted. “I’ve been waiting for what feels like an eternity for Season 2.”

Another X account with the handle @DaFuturMrKc added, “[Severance] Season 2 coming out in January has me sick to my stomach tho. @AppleTV Do f*cking better! Don’t make a great series and then need a year to revamp the next season.”

Rumoredly, Stiller and the rest of the Severance team are ensuring they make up for the wait with quite a few things this time.

There’s also a 43-page book for those wanting an in-depth view of Lumon Industries here.

What Can We Expect from the Second Season?

Per Deadline, the next round of Severance will provide a deeper look into the sinister side of Lumon Industries as more shockers are revealed. Additionally, judging from the preview, the striking cinematography is expected to captivate the audience on another level. Erickson also plans to expand on world-building and character development and answer some questions that may have been left hanging in the first season.

“It’s so exciting! And there is an expanding world that I think is teased and, in a way, is owed by the way that we ended season one,” Erickson said in an interview with GoldDerby. “We know that [the characters] have stuff going on on the outside that we haven’t seen [and] that we haven’t really explored yet.”

He furthered when speaking on the coming episodes, “Inside the company… it’s a vast company, and there’s plenty of stuff that we haven’t seen yet. So, um… it’s expanding on both sides.”

Although the unveiling is still months away, watchers can look forward to 10 episodes in Severance season 2, which will run until March 2025. Season 1 only had 9.

Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Bob Balaban (Capote), Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), Robby Benson (Beauty and the Beast), Stefano Carannante (Mirabilia), Olafur Darri Olafsson (Lady Dynamite), and John Noble (Fringe) have been added to the cast.
