We all want to experience top-notch dining with stellar views and 5-star hotels or a furnished apartment for every vacation, but not all of us have 5-star hotel money. Tragically, most of us don’t. So what are our options? Here’s some tips for traveling on a budget.

The good news is that trips don’t have to be expensive to be lovely and lots of fun. You can splurge now and again for the red carpet treatment, but in the meantime, for shorter trips like a city break in Rome, here are some tips for traveling on a budget in between the big trips.

RV/Camper Life

If you haven’t discovered camper life yet, you’re late to the party. Campers and RVs have gotten a sudden increase in popularity due to their practicality and long-term affordability. People are flipping RVs so well they look better than most apartments!

The good news is that you don’t have to run out and buy an RV: tons of websites allow you to rent RVs by the day. The camper route means combining your hotel and car rental costs and eliminating airfare.

Of course, you have to consider the accommodations. Campers are relatively affordable but lack some of the amenities that RVs can offer (showers, full-size toilets, etc.).

If you’re worried about charging your devices while gallivanting abroad, don’t be. There are tons of portable backup power options, even solar ones, that will keep your tech life running smoothly (even though you’re supposed to be unplugged during your vay-cay… we won’t tell).

Travel “Locally”

You don’t have to go overseas to see beauty; you can usually find it right in your backyard! If you live in a “hub” city only 3-4 hours away from places you’d like to visit, you have your weekends already planned out for you.

See what places you can explore that are a few hours’ drive from you. They don’t have to be touristy cities either; there are lots of hidden gems in the US that aren’t super busy and don’t gauge prices. Take a trip to some less-loved cities closer to where you live.

Most cities also have an amazing local state park scene that offers camping, kayaking, and other outdoorsy activities closer to home. And don’t forget the National Parks; some of the most incredible beauties the US has to offer are at these locations!

Hostels

If you’re committed to traveling abroad, hostels are an inexpensive way to find lodging for several days, with prices as low as $10 a night. Hostels are a great way to save money for young travelers, especially when traveling to touristy hot spots like Italy, France, England, etc.

Although you’ll probably be sharing a room, this can also be a fun way to meet new people and travel in a group.

Flight Flexibility

Maybe you don’t know where you want to go and just want to get out of here. We’ve all been there. With the budget-friendly options above, you can get out of here without breaking the bank and still enjoy a social media-worthy vacation.
