“‘Divorced Sistas’ is a story of resilience and the power of female friendship,” said creator, writer, and director Tyler Perry in a BET news release. “It is my hope that audiences will fall in love with these dynamic characters, and that they will be able to explore their own personal truths about healing and love in the process. I’m excited to launch this brand new show, and proud to do it on BET’s biggest night of the year and in their 45th year of programming!”
Scott Mills, who is CEO of BET, praised Perry and his work with the network.
“Tyler Perry has been the most incredible partner to BET, delivering record-breaking hits and top series year after year. And now, we eagerly await the arrival of Tyler’s newest series—Divorced Sistas—a brilliant expansion of the Sistas universe that for years has been the most watched series among Black viewers across television. We’re thrilled to launch this new series with Tyler and further expand the slate of compelling and authentic stories we deliver to our audiences.”
Perry seemingly has had the magic touch when it comes to creating hit drama series.
His first venture into a television series, “The Haves and Have Nots,” lasted for eight seasons, and this will be the eighth season for “Sistas,” which may be Perry’s most popular hit show to date.
The common theme in all of these series is sisterhood and the drama that sometimes those sisterhoods can bring. The hit show “Sistas” has featured crazy ex-wives, obsessive ex-boyfriends, hit men, a woman pregnant with twins with two different fathers, and lots of sex.
And while sometimes fans of the show express their frustration with Perry online about the slow-moving storylines, the show continues to be a hit among fans, and they continue to watch.
“Divorced Sistas” has the advantage of having a built-in audience with “Sistas” who are more likely to tune in just to see what the show is about. Perry’s Zatima, like “Divorced Sistas,” started off online streaming on BET; now, it has become a part of the network’s lineup. If “Divorced Sistas” is anything like the original, Perry will have another hit on his hands and a loyal fan base who will follow the series as they have done with his other hit series.
Fans love a good drama because it reminds them of old soap operas, like “Dynasty” and “Dallas,” which also brought the drama every week and had fans begging for more, just like Perry’s hit series.
