Beyoncé is most popular for her music, but she has become quite a savvy business woman and mogul over the years. Coming from Destiny’s Child to the big fanbase that she has as a solo artist, the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer is considered Queen Bey for a reason. However, one thing fans don’t talk about too often is her first clothing line, House of Deréon. Who was it inspired by? Why wasn’t it more successful?  What happened to House of Deréon?  Here are the answers to all of your questions.

The Birth of House of Deréon

Beyoncé and her mother always had a thing for fashion. Queen Bey herself said that she “grew up in a fabric store,” and that her mother would frequently take her with her when shopping for fabric and other clothing materials. It is also known that Beyonce’s mom, Tina, would often make the costumes for the members Destiny’s Child which brought individuality to the group, but also helped them look cohesive and put together (The News). After realizing that her and her mother truly had a love for fashion and respected each other’s ideas, they brought up their soon-to-be label on multiple platforms including, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ and ‘The Tyra Banks Show’.  In 2006, House of Deréon was born.

House of Deréon was made not only because of Beyoncé and Tina’s love for fashion, but also to honor three generations of clothing. These generations include Beyoncé’s generation, Tina’s generation, and Bey’s grandmother Agnez’s generation. Beyoncé said that she loved the style from the 70s, but also her grandmother’s style from the 40s. Her and her mother wanted to combine elements of each with this new clothing label (Ebony). They also aimed to make it affordable so fans wouldn’t have to break the bank to look good.

Style and Success

The tagline for the House of Deréon eventually became “Where the sidewalk and catwalk meet,” and the clothes were geared towards young women and girls, as it also produced clothes for juniors. The line sold clothes in a number of categories including hoodies, embroidered jeans, and sweatpants. In 2008, Tina created a more vintage-inspired collection that specialized in dresses. The goal of the brand was to sell a variety of clothing that closed the gap between streetwear and more high fashion styles. Tina and Beyonce also made it so that while they were merging generations and styles of clothing, all of it still had a Hip-Hop flavor to it. So, what happened to House of Deréon?

The Fall of House of Deréon

The brand was successful and popular for some time, so successful that it was able to launch in the UK in 2011 (Vibe). However, this success did not last long. The junior line eventually shut down, and the House of Deréon brand as a whole came to a close in 2012. Some say that the brand did not have a clear vision, and that was why it failed. Others say that it did not stand out enough in the fashion market. Regardless, it seems that Beyoncé somewhat learned from her mistakes in her line Ivy Park.

Ivy Park

Ivy Park was launched in 2016, and it was collaboration between Beyoncé and Adidas. It was a streetwear clothing line that ran successfully for years. However, sales eventually started to go down. By 2022, sales were said to be down by 50% (Fast Company). In 2023, Beyonce and Adidas agreed to end their contract and go their separate ways. This was due to them having multiple disagreements on marketing and other creative aspects.

Beyoncé now owns the line, and claims to want to continue it on her own in the future.
