One of the longest celebrity couples in the music industry, Jhené Aiko and Big Sean are caught in breakup rumors, with the reason attributed to ‘commitment issues’. The pair, who have been in a decade-long relationship, are calling it quits following Big Sean’s disapproval of making things legal and Jhené Aiko’s desire to walk down the aisle.

Although this is not their first breakup, Jhené Aiko and Big Sean broke up in March 2019, with Aiko sharing a message on social media. She wrote, “Me and Sean are good. I’ve got tons of love for him.” They got back together and made a public appearance in 2021, on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards, where Aiko’s album had three nominations.

When did Jhené Aiko and Big Sean meet?

Big Sean and Aiko first met in 2012 at a music studio. The pair went on an outing together and attended a Los Angeles Lakers game. Aiko admitted to having a boyfriend at the time, but Sean didn’t care. Aiko said, “We went to a Lakers game. It was a long time ago […] first of all, I had a boyfriend and me and Sean had already met. We were friends. So he asked me to go out with him and even though I had a boyfriend.”

She added, “It was pretty obvious after a while it was a date…We had never really been alone together. It was really fun.”

They started off as friends and were friends for years. Eventually, they were both single and decided to take things further in 2017. She communicated, “It just came to a point where it was like, ‘I’m single, you’re single, we love each other.’ We actually already loved each other as people and then it was like, ‘Okay, let’s just, you know, be together.‘”

Are Jhené Aiko and Big Sean breakup rumors true?

Yes, the breakup rumours are true as Aiko and Sean are going their separate ways.

Did Jhené Aiko and Big Sean ever get married?

No, the pair never got married or engaged. However, between July 2014 and October 2017, Aiko was married to her ex-husband. Oladipo Omishore, popularly known as Dot da Genius. She filed for a divorce in 2016 on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. In 2017, the divorce was legally finalized by a judge.

Meanwhile, Big Sean has never been married but was previously engaged to his ex, actress Naya Rivera.

The rapper and actress started dating in April 2013. Love-struck Sean could not wait to put a ring on it and proposed in October 2013. He told E! News, “Every morning I wake up, I look over at her and be like, ‘I’m winning so hard.‘” However, he broke off the engagement six months later, in April 2014.

Why did Big Sean not marry Jhené Aiko?

Well, Big Sean has his personal reasons for not marrying Aiko; however, he explained, “marriage symbolizes the best relationship. I would like to, but there’s a lot of work that needs to be done.” One thing is certain: he loves her. He further shared, “To be real with you, just like any people who have dealt with love, we’ve had our ups and downs. And I think it’s still finding the right navigation through it all.”

Unfortunately, Aiko had to leave as she was expecting more commitment from Sean. She reportedly gave him “multiple ultimatums,” which did not yield a legal commitment from Sean. “Eventually, she realized that ring wasn’t coming,” an inside source shared. “She decided it was time to move on.”

Did Jhené Aiko cover her Big Sean tattoo?

In October 2017, Aiko got a tattoo of Big Sean’s face a week after finalizing her divorce, calling him the love of her life. The ‘art of love’ was done by celebrity tattoo artist Miryam “the Witchdoctor” Lumpini.

Conclusion

A source close to the couple revealed, “They’re in a great place — it’s peaceful. They both respect each other too much to let things get messy. They just want to do what’s best for their child.”

After a decade of being in a relationship together, Jhené Aiko’s individual networth is $6M, and Big Sean ‘s worth is $26M. Earlier in July 2025, Aiko sold her house in Encino, California, for 3.5M. They also share a child, their 3-year-old son Noah.
