1. She Started Skating Before Most Kids Started School

Laila was first introduced to skating at a young age, stepping on the ice when she was just three years old. Her father introduced her to skating early, and it quickly became part of her everyday life. In an interview, she expressed, “It was my dad… he put us in as soon as I could crawl or walk.” While other kids were learning basic sports, Edwards was already gaining balance and confidence on the ice.

She first tried figure skating, but hockey quickly became her favorite. She loved the speed and physical style of the game. As she grew older, she trained with top youth hockey programs and even played on boys’ teams in Cleveland. Those early years helped shape her strong and fearless playing style.

 

2. She Has Been Making History for Years

Many people know Laila Edwards because of the Olympics, but she made history even before that. In 2023, she became the first Black woman to play for the U.S. women’s senior national hockey team.

That same year, she scored a goal at the Women’s World Championship, becoming the first Black woman to score for Team USA at that level.
