In 2010, the last scene of Why Did I Get Married Too? left audiences wondering what would happen next. A year after Patricia’s husband died, her colleague approached her after a lecture and introduced her to a philanthropist admirer in hopes of landing a large donation. Patricia hesitates, then agrees. As she turns to say hello to her admirer, her mouth drops and a gaze come across her eyes like a smitten schoolgirl. Standing in front of her is Daniel Franklin (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson). The two smile as he asks her out for coffee, and the screen fades to black.

Now, 16 years later, the third installment of the franchise will premiere on Netflix this September.  Fans get to see what happens with Patricia and Daniel, right? Well not so fast!

Let’s take an inside look at the Why Did I Get Married Again? cast and characters and analyze the reason to revisit the film after all these years, and answer, why now? Why Netflix? And just like with the highest-grossing biopic of all time, Michael, why no Janet Jackson??

Why Did I Get Married Again? Cast

What we do know is that the cast reunites to honor the nuptials between Wesley (Everett Osborne) and Jasmine (Armani Geer).  The characters are the son of Roselyn (Taraji P. Henson), and the daughter of Marcus (Michael Jai White) and Angela (Tasha Smith). As they watch the celebration unravel, it sparks introspection. The couple’s time together feels like looking in a mirror, with their children reflecting the blemishes of their relationships and pasts. Preparing for the wedding becomes a catalyst for overwhelming emotional turmoil, and an event meant to celebrate love instead strains their marriages and calls them into question.

Jill Scott, Lamman Rucker, Sharon Leal, and Richard T. Jones all return to the film.

Who is Roselyn, and has she appeared in the previous films? No, she is an old friend who has never been mentioned before, but Taraji P. Henson brings her to life in the new installment.

In a recent People’s Magazine article, Henson said, “she’s actually been friends with the group for a long time. She’s the fierce, powerful businesswoman who travels with the group to Lake Como to see her son get married… and let’s just say, may be traveling with some extra baggage of her own.”

Henson has teamed with Perry on five films, including Straw, Acrimony, and I Can Do Bad All by Myself. Her role should heighten the group’s charisma and feel tailor-made for the film, rather than serving as a celebrity replacement for Jackson’s character.

What happened to Janet Jackson??

While Jackson has not commented, the assumption is that scheduling conflicts and previous arrangements kept her out of the most recent film.  In 2025, Perry first began teasing the new film by posting the script’s cover page and tagging the original cast members, including Jackson.  That sparked fan speculation that all the cast members would be returning.  Fans assumed Jackson would return as psychologist Patricia Agnew, but we know now that that will not be the case. Her absence leaves a large hole in the storyline, especially around Gavin’s death and Patricia’s new relationship with Daniel (Johnson). Hopefully, Perry will address that gap and bring some closure to the storyline.

Why The Why Did I Get Married? Series Comes To Netflix

In 2007, Why Did I Get Married? opened at No. 1 in the US and made $55.8 million globally. The sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too?, earned $60.6 million worldwide. That raises the question of why Perry would release the third installment on Netflix instead of in theaters. According to Deadline, in October 2023, Perry signed a multi-year contract with Netflix, giving the streamer the exclusive right to review, develop, or purchase his new ideas, scripts, or projects before they can be pitched elsewhere. The deal also includes eight feature films over the next four years, along with original television dramas and faith-based movies, which include ‘Beauty In Black’, starring Bailey Tippen among others.

The advantages of releasing films on Netflix instead of in theaters include saving money on marketing and ensuring distribution. Traditional revenue-sharing models are costly, but streaming releases can provide guaranteed upfront payments. This protects the payer’s money against contractor default and removes the risk of nonpayment. In other words, creators do not have to rely on box-office performance to recoup expenses. Although a film can make much more at the box office, the risk of losing money is greater as well. For non-blockbuster films with a niche audience, streaming eliminates costs and provides guaranteed money.

Much like other sequels released on streaming services, such as Coming to America 2 on Prime Video and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix, this film gives up the outing of a night at the movies, the smell of popcorn, and the big-screen experience. But fans can still host watch parties for the long-awaited film.

Why Did I Get Married Again? will serve as a nice bookend to a franchise that gave its audience so many tears and laughs. It will focus on parenting, legacy, and new relationships. The blend of tragedy and humor will remain as the couples realize their kids are becoming exactly like them in the way they live and the relationships they choose, forcing them to assess the underlying structure of their own relationships.
