With the country presently commemorating Black History Month, it was only right to splice together a column featuring the best black shows/movies you should watch on Netflix right now.

Nothing, aside from walking on the moon, compares to the African American experience in America. Tales ranging from enslavement to becoming President of the United States display the power of sheer resilience and divinity.

Over the past decades, Hollywood has opened its doors to such multifaceted narratives, and as a result, African American storytellers have had the chance to share their projects with the world.

With that said, Netflix has snagged the crème de la crème and made them obtainable to view via stream.

So make some popcorn, lay back, and tune into our list of ‘Five Black Shows & Movies You Should Watch on Netflix’ this month!

All American

This film follows a gifted teen football player named Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) from Crenshaw, California. His world is flipped upside down after a coach from Beverly Hills encourages him to leave Crenshaw and play on his team. To pull it off, James moves in with the coach and his affluent family. Naturally, the football star runs into an array of challenges and hardships. Watch All American here.

 

Concrete Cowboy

Believe it or not, there were authentic African American cowboys in North Philadelphia back in the day, and “Concrete Cowboy” shares the tale. Sefer, a bright-eyed teenager, is sent to reside with his father for the summer. While he’s there, he links up with a pack of city cowboys who ultimately send his life down a rampageous path. When They See Us

Two decades after five African American kids were unjustly convicted when a female jogger in Central Park was raped, “When They See Us” inspects the Exonerated Five story. The limited series exhibits how racism sways the criminal justice system and is able to keep innocent people locked up for decades. Ava Duvernay’s miniseries even earned Jharrel Jerome a Golden Globe, respectively. Watch When They See Us here.

She’s Gotta Have It

Spike Lee’s film She’s Gotta Have It inspired this television series. DeWanda Wise stars in this refashioned version as Lola Darling, an artistic Brooklyn native who’s searching for love. Juggling three suitable bachelors, Lola has to choose who she wants and what she wants. Watch She’s Gotta Have It here.

 

All Day and a Night

Ashton Sanders (Jahkor Lincoln) narrates this prolific film. The story follows Lincoln who’s serving life in prison. While incarcerated, the young man reflects back on the circumstances, the people, and the system that caused him to commit his fateful crime. Watch All Day and a Night here.
