Freestyle of the Week Review: Cassidy, “Birthday Cake Freestyle”
The Freestyle of the Week stays in Philadelphia, as Cassidy lays lines on Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake.”
While the general premise–Cass is talking about cash when he mentions cake, for those unfamiliar with remedial slang or are simply new to HipHhop–is far from brilliant, The Hustler sticks to what he knows and includes enough tight rhymes and puns to make for an entertaining, if not groundbreaking, listen.
Cassidy’s distinctive delivery, with its swaggering confidence reminiscent of one of Philly’s many cockfighting roosters, has always worked well over heavy, dance floor ready beats–see “I’ma Hustla” or ” My Drink ‘N My 2 Step”–making his beat selection apt. Still, when one listens to this or his last full release, C.A.S.H., one cannot help but wonder where the cold hearted killer who tore up Swizz Beatz’ “Where Tha Cash At” has gone.
