4th of July weekend, for most, is about barbecuing, fireworks, and celebrating freedom. For the people of New Orleans, however, the prolific weekend symbolizes so much more.  This year marks the 19th annual Essence Festival, held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in NOLA. The annual festival is a three-day celebration of African-American music and culture, featuring performances in genres such as R & B, Hip-Hop, Soul, Reggae, and Jazz.

This year, the festivities will begin on Thursday the 4th, and include a celebration with entertainment, competitions, and demonstrations from celebrity chefs. This event will take place in Woldenberg Park, and is sure to be a great experience for attendees of all ages.

On Friday, the official event kicks off with an Essence veteran lineup of Maxwell, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, and Brandy, to name a few, alongside newcomers such as Emeli Sandé. Saturday continues with appearances by New Edition, Trey Songz, Keyshia Cole, and Solange. The event culminates on Sunday, in which event headliner Beyonce will deliver her second performance as an Essence artist. Also performing that day will be breakout artist Janelle Monae, Daley, and Tamia.

The festival has gained nationwide attention not only due to the artists it attracts, but also the powerful speakers, seminars, and overall shift from a music event to a communal organization of culture. Seminars this year will cover an array of topics such as careers, education, and relationships, and will feature speakers such as Steve Harvey, Al Sharpton, and Andrea Kelly.

With tickets starting at just fifty dollars, the festival is sure to leave any attendee with a feeling of empowerment and inspiration, as thousands come together as a community to celebrate the African-American culture.
