1. Review and Revise Important Documents

People who are married often make preparations to make sure the other person is taken care of in case something happens to the other. If you have life insurance policies, trusts, a will, retirement accounts, etc., then you need to review.

Have the beneficiary changed from your ex-wife to your children or appoint a relative to act in their stead if they are underage. If you’re in a life-altering accident, the last person you want as power of attorney for you is a bitter ex-wife.

People think they can wait on this because nothing is going to happen, but you can’t know that. Take care of it now, so your children aren’t paying for it later.

2. Things to Do After Divorce Include Seeing a Financial Planner

You were once a two-person income and now you’re not only down to one, but you could be paying or receiving alimony and child support. Child support laws can differ from state to state, but if you have children under the age of 18, then they’re getting support.

Discuss your best options for not only paying the bills and keeping up with alimony and how to pay child support but also investing in yourself and your future.

3. Get a Thorough Physical

You’ve spent the last several months on an emotional roller coaster and it’s finally over. You’re exhausted, depressed, excited, scared and you’ve been through the emotional and physical ringer. It’s a good idea to go to your doctor and get a physical.

4. Talk to a Therapist or Good Friend

You may be tempted to put yourself into isolation for a while to figure things out and process what has happened. Your time might be better spent talking about it with a professional therapist. You may not truly know how you feel about the divorce until you’ve talked with a professional.

If you can’t afford a professional, then call your best friend and vent. They’ll be good listeners and always on your side.
