Salt-N-Pepa Biopic Airing January 23 On Lifetime
Legendary Hip-Hop rap group Salt-N-Pepa teamed up with Lifetime for their three hour movie, set to premiere on January 23, 2021, at 8 PM ET. The Salt-N-Pepa biopic is directed by Mario Van Pebbles and co-produced by rapper, singer, and actress Queen Latifah.
The all-female hip-hop rap group originated in Queens, New York in 1985. Salt-N-Pepa consists of the members Cheryl “Salt” James, Sandra “Pepa” Denton, and sometimes features Deidra Muriel Roper “DJ Spinderella”. The Salt-N-Pepa movie will allow viewers to witness Salt-N-Pepa starting out as young college students at Queensborough Community College and their life journey as they transition into the world of rap and Hip-Hop.
The movie will closely follow the group as they break records to become the first female rap act to go platinum and experience groundbreaking success. Viewers will also get to see performances of the groups greatest hits such as Let’s Talk About Sex”, “What a Man”, “Shoop” and “Push It”.
Although Salt-N-Pepa has been promoting the biopic movie online to fans and expressing their hard work and dedication towards production, DJ Spinderella went on Twitter to express feeling left out of the production and development.
Sorry but I gotta speak on this Lifetime special.., Too often, Black women who have made meaningful contributions in their industry are left out of historical narratives.

She continued to tweet, “Back when Salt n’ Pepa was building our legacy, which is rooted in empowering women, I could not have dreamed that this same group would one day disempower me. Words cannot fully express my disappointment when I learned a decision was made to move forward with a Lifetime biopic that wrongfully excluded me from every aspect of development and production… all the while using my image throughout, given that I played an integral role in the group’s story and success.”
