The traditional idea of how to live is not the only one these days. The white picket fence and perfect lawn are not the standard any longer that everybody is looking for. There are people who want to get back to a more natural rhythm of life and to find a house where they can live off the grid.

With the advent of powerful solar panels, high speed internet available in remote areas, and other creature comforts you can live off grid and not sacrifice modern life in the process. Many people are able to work from anywhere thanks to the ability to work online from anywhere. This means that you can live off the grid and get a lot out of your life. In this article, we will go over just what the benefits are that come with the decision.

1 – Energy independence

There is an energy crisis happening these days that is putting the costs to heat and cool your home through the roof. It is a very volatile situation and the more in control you are when it comes to your energy supply, the better off you will be. However, when you are at the mercy of your energy provider, then you have no control over a lot of factors that make it difficult for you.

When you have your own energy supply through solar, wind, water, or even a portable generator, then you are far more in control and you don’t have to worry about a disruption to energy supplies.

This is one of the biggest reasons to go off grid so you are not dealing with a lot of the problems that come from being dependent on energy suppliers. There are loads of renewable options for heating your house through a heat pump combined with solar, or even using wood burning stoves since you can grow your own trees to use for fire.

2 – Food security

Living off the grid also means removing yourself from a supply chain that is not sustainable. One such supply chain concerns food. Most of the food eaten in North America is grown in a few small areas and then shipped thousands of miles. The result is the use of a lot of fossil fuels and food that has low nutritional content.

Growing your own food should be high on the list of your priorities when living off the grid as it is a huge benefit. Not only are you reducing your carbon footprint, but you are eating healthier and more nutritious food.

3 – A better environment

When you reduce your carbon footprint as close to neutral as possible then you are doing a huge help for the environment. It may seem like a drop in the bucket when it is just one family. However, it’s all the little things that add up to a great push towards a cleaner and sustainable environment.

If everybody did their part then the global warming crisis would be reduced.
