Peacock’s Praise This, starring Chlöe Bailey premieres April 07, 2023. We were able to get an exclusive viewing of the film, and here is a quick Praise This review!
Praise This begins with a failed praise team competition in which one of the main characters Melissa has too much confidence in her set, forcing Big Love, whose character is played by comedian Druski, to try and help the praise team with a Gospel freestyle. This causes the choir to be booed off stage. Here we also meet Pastor Goodman, nicknamed PG, played by Tristan Wilds, and his wife Natalie played by Crystal Renee Hayslett of Sistas.
The film segues into Chlöe Bailey’s character Sam on a car ride with her dad from LA to her aunt and uncle’s home in Atlanta to help get her act together. Here she meets her sister/cousin Jess for the first time, who is so overjoyed to have a family member her age around as she has struggles socially.
Jess immediately introduces Sam to the ways of the South and forces her to attend church on her first Sunday in Atlanta. Once they get to church, Jess introduces Sam to the other church members and the praise team which makes Sam feel as though Atlanta isn’t as bad as she thought it would be. With plenty of eye candy and access to the local talent Ty played by Quavo, Sam soon figures out that Atlanta was the play all along.
On a night out, Jess and Sam go to a party hosted by Ty and get a chance to meet the rapper one on one. Ty seems to be very intrigued by Sam when she sings a cover of his song, just before the party gets shut down by 12. Jess’s parents seem a good punishment for misguided venture to be Sam joining the praise team.
After Sam gets her hooks into the flow of the praise team, and a few personal visits with Ty, she decides that she knows just what the praise team needs to win the competition and becomes determined that no one will get in her way!
Praise This is extremely funny and intriguing. It will have you dying laughing, singing along to your favorite Gospel songs, and rooting for the underdog all in one. I personally really enjoyed the film, and have suggested it to a few friends and family members already. It is your typical Gospel based film, with all of the normal everyday vexes that believers of Christ go through on a regular basis, as well as those who just show an association with God.
Chlöe Bailey is amazing as always, and so is Anjelika Washington as Jess!
