Clifford Smith, better known by his stage name Method Man, has achieved success in both the music and television industries — yet, the Wu-Tang Clan O.G. has still struggled with mental illness despite carving out a great career in entertainment.

For the most recent Comedy Gold Minds podcast episode, Method Man and stand-up comedian Kevin Hart engaged in a conversation.

Hart questioned the co-star of his Soul Plane feature film about overcoming internal difficulties like depression.

“I was my own shadow, meaning I was in my own way. I had to get out of my own way, said Method Man.

He went on, “I saw that I could not control the people around me, but I could control myself. One thing that stood out for me, when I was younger – basically being a little dirty kid with nothing, no control over where I lived, what I ate, where I slept. But I had these sports – football and lacrosse – there I had control and I was good at it.”

The hip hop star furthered, “So I needed those little moments where I need to be in control of what goes on in my life. I had to look myself in the mirror and say, ‘I’m tired of myself. I want better for me, I have more to contribute, and start there.’ Self-check, absolutely. If you don’t, sooner or later, somebody else is gonna check you.”

Method Man has contributed as a recording artist to numerous critically acclaimed Wu-Tang Clan albums, including Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers (1993).

The native of Staten Island later released solo works including Tical (1994). He also recorded several joint albums with the New Jersey rapper Redman.

Additionally, Method Man is a current cast member of the Power Book II: Ghost TV series, which was created by 50 Cent. Meth has made appearances on a number of television programs, including The Wire, Oz, The Deuce, Blue Bloods, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
