Sony’s The Equalizer 3 surprised everyone by topping the global box office with an outstanding showing during its debut weekend.
Not only did the action movie come in first place domestically, but it also brought in a record-breaking amount from other countries, giving it a $60 million global opening.
The two previous Equalizer films starring Denzel Washington had earned $382 million worldwide in total. The domestic box office take for The Equalizer 3 was $13 million on Friday, $11 million on Saturday, and an anticipated $10 million on Sunday, for a three-day total of roughly $34 million.
Behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the film is anticipated to earn roughly $42 million over the drawn-out four-day Labor Day weekend, making it the second-best Labor Day opening ever.
This weekend, the third Equalizer added little over $26 million globally, which, at the current rate of exchange, puts it 29% ahead of the first flick in comparable territories and 19% ahead of the prior iteration.
The Equalizer 3 Smashes The Box Office
In 2014, the year of the first movie’s release, The Equalizer earned $101 million domestically and $192 million internationally.
When The Equalizer 2 came out in 2018, it made nearly comparable sales of $102 million in the U.S. and $190 million internationally.
Sony has its fingers crossed that the third (and apparently final) movie will become the first entry in the series to gross over $200 million worldwide.
This past weekend, Europe brought in $15.6 million, with the U.K. coming in first ($3.5 million over five days), then France ($2.8 million), Germany ($2.4 million), and Spain ($1.7 million). The Equalizer 3 made a total of $5.7 million in the Asia Pacific area, with Australia leading the way with $2.3 million and Indonesia coming in second with $1.1 million. Saudi Arabia made a $1.6 million debut in the Middle East.
