In the late 2010s, the City Girls reached mainstream popularity on social media and it wasn’t long before they were topping charts. With the popularity of songs like “Fu*k Dat Ni**a” and “Act Up,” JT and Yung Miami were two of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.
After disagreements between the two, the duo fell apart. Following the release of JT’s debut solo album, City Girl fans are wondering what’s next. Here’s a timeline of the JT and Yung Miami friendship and their rise to fame and popularity.

00s-2017: JT and Yung Miami Become The City Girls
It’s unknown exactly when JT and Yung Miami, born Jatavia Shakara Johnson and Caresha Romeka Brownlee, met and became friends. Still, its been since they were teenagers, so it’s estimated that they met in the mid-2000s.
In 2017 they became the duo known as the City Girls with the release of their first song “Fu*k Dat Ni**a”, a diss to their ex-boyfriends. The duo would travel to clubs and pay DJs to play the song as it blew up on social media simultaneously.

2018-2021: JT Goes to Jail, Yung Miami Pushes For Stardom, & Platinum Records After JT’s Release
In July 2018 JT started her two-year term in federal prison for aggravated identity theft. While she was away, Yung Miami continued to push their debut studio mixtape Period after the duo signed with the Quality Control music label. In the same month of JT’s official incarceration, Yung Miami was spotted in Drake’s “In My Feelings” music video and gave the City Girls’ music even more rise.
In November 2018, the City Girls released their first studio album Girl Code. This album featured two of their biggest hits “Act Up” and “Twerk”, which earned them 3x Platinum and Platinum certifications respectively.

A year later, JT was released from prison and sent to a halfway house. JT, under the City Girls name, dropped the song “JT First Day Out” as a celebration. In June 2020, their second studio album, City on Lock, was leaked online and the duo officially chose to release the album the same day. Still, its leading singles “Jobs” and “P*ssy Talk” earned Gold and Platinum certifications.
In 2021, the City Girls blew up on social media once again with the video app TikTok. Their feature on the remix of the song “Throat Baby (Go Baby)” by BRS Kash and their own “Twerkulator” both racked up an immense amount of streams.

2022-Present Day: RAW and Solo Careers
Closing out the timeline of the JT and Yung Miami friendship, 2023 brought fans the City Girls’ third studio album RAW. The album was met with mixed reactions as many fans were disappointed in the duo’s lack of growth. While the leading singles “No Bars” (a single by JT) and “Good Love” (featuring Usher) were received well, the album generally didn’t do as well as their first two.
Aside from the music, the two have had multiple disagreements in recent years, leading to a strained relationship. In April 2024, the duo had a public altercation on the social media app 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) revolved around Yung Miami accusing JT of sneak dissing her on solo tracks. According to Yung Miami, the two had decided to split ways and focus on their solo careers after the failure of RAW.

Amidst these disagreements, Yung Miami had shown that she could hold her own as a solo rapper. She’s released the solo songs “Rap Freaks” and “50/50” as well as been featured on tracks by Quavo (“Strub Tha Ground”, 2021); Gucci Mane (“First Impression”, 2022); and Lola Brooke (“Don’t Play Wit It”, 2023). Yung Miami also pursued a career in the media with her celebrity-featured podcast “Caresha Please.”
JT has had an amazing solo stunt as well, having released the singles “Sideways” (2024), and “OKAY” (2024); both being singles for her first solo studio album City Cinderella. She’s also been featured as a solo artist on songs from Summer Walker (“Ex for a Reason”, 2021); GloRilla (“F.N.F. (Let’s Go) – Remix”, 2022); Nicki Minaj (“Super Freaky Girl – Queen Mix”, 2022); and Kali Uchis (“Muñekita”, 2023).
