Issa Rae and showrunner Prentice Penny announced “Insecure: The 10th Anniversary Tour,” this month, a 13-date run celebrating a decade since the HBO series first aired. Jay Ellis, Yvonne Orji, and Natasha Rothwell are all attached to appear alongside Rae and Penny. Amanda Seales, who played Tiffany DuBois in the show’s core friend group, was not part of the announcement, and fans noticed right away. Meanwhile, many are wondering why Amanda Seales will be missing from the Insecure anniversary tour.
What the Tour Actually Is
The tour kicks off September 10 at The Met in Philadelphia and runs through October 8 at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, with stops including Washington DC, Detroit, Boston, Brooklyn, Las Vegas, Oakland, Chicago, Atlanta, and Houston along the way. It’s billed as an evening of candid conversation and behind-the-scenes stories from the show’s run, hosted by Rae and Penny with Orji, Ellis, and Rothwell joining for select dates.
How Seales Responded
Seales addressed her absence in a video styled after the viral “Netflix Doc” format, sitting in a dimly lit room the way true crime interview subjects often do, and speaking in character as Tiffany DuBois. She kept the tone light, saying, “It’s fine… DERRICK!” a reference to Tiffany’s onscreen husband.
The bit read as comedic, but it came from a real place, Seales has spoken before about feeling left out of rooms tied to a show she helped build.

The Backstory Between Seales and Rae
This isn’t a new tension. Seales has said the strain between her and Rae dates back to 2019, when she said she wasn’t let into an Emmys after-party for Black stars, and felt Rae didn’t step in on her behalf. During an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast, Seales pushed back on the idea that she was difficult to work with on set, saying, “How can I be a mean girl on a set that ain’t my set? It’s your show. You are my boss. I don’t even have the capacity to be the mean girl here because you can fire me.”
She’s also said of Rae, “She wasn’t empowering to me. She didn’t feel like I was needed. She didn’t feel like I deserved to be protected.”
Rae has addressed the rift too, though more briefly. Asked in a separate interview to name someone she wouldn’t work with again, she responded, “I mean, anybody who’s going on a podcast to talk sh*t about me.”
Where Things Stand
Neither side has confirmed exactly why Seales wasn’t brought into the anniversary tour, and Rae hasn’t commented on the announcement directly. What’s public is a years-long strain between two people–one who built one of the most significant Black ensemble shows of the last decade, and the other who co-starred. This now plays out again as that show gets its victory lap.
Seales was, and still is, part of the “Insecure” history either way. Her absence from the stage doesn’t change what Tiffany DuBois added to the show or how the character is remembered by fans.
