‘Black Panther’ Becomes a Hit at Global Box Office, Garners Over $1 Billion Since Its Release
Marvel’s Black Panther has crossed the billion-dollar mark, becoming the first movie of 2018 to make at least a billion dollars in revenue. This is the highest-grossing movie with a black director, according to Fandango.
Box Office Mojo says that Black Panther topped the weekend box office for the fourth straight week in a row following its release. It has even become the second highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movie at the domestic box office, right behind Marvel’s The Avenger. The final major debut in China helped in solidifying the film’s billion-dollar mark, where it earned $66.5 million in the opening weekend. The success in China also helped to debunk an old belief that black films do not sell in Asia countries.
Black Panther, which is the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is led by Chadwick Boseman, portraying the main character, T’Challa aka Black Panther, who serves as king of the technology advanced country of Wakanda. Accompanying Boseman happens to be Michael B. Jordan as lead villain Erik Killmonger, as well as Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Andy Serkis, and Letitia Wright.
Since its release, Black Panther has garnered critical acclaim, and it has come close to having a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes for any comic-book superhero movie.
According to the Washington Post, Ryan Coogler, the film’s director, posted a statement after his movie’s massive weekend debut, writing last month that “never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong.” He goes on to say, “It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film.”
Black Panther is out in theaters now. And, as of now, the hype for the afro-futurism film is real and the ticket sales show no signs of slowing down.
