Singer Tank Facing Lawsuit After Supposedly Stealing Music from Producer
Apparently, Tank might’ve gone a little too savage with his last album… like stealing someone else’s music.
According to theJasmineBrand, music producer Kerry Marshall, aka Kerry 2Smooth, is accusing the 42-year-old of purloining his work and masking it as his own, and now, the singer, along with songwriter J. Valentine and Atlantic Records, is reportedly being hit with a federal lawsuit.
In court documents, Marshall claims that Tank’s “Only One” track from his eighth studio album, SAVAGE, which released last year, contains portions of music that he made and copyrighted, alleging that Tank “copied key structural elements and themes and motifs.”
For those of you who are not familiar with Marshall, he’s a guitarist, producer, artist developer, and member of the Recording Academy. He’s also the lead guitarist for award-winning group Black Eyed Peas and a variety of other artists, and he runs a popular YouTube channel where he uploads instructional videos on music and guitaring.
Additionally, documents read that, to date, Marshall has seen no pay from the record, and Tank, nor any of the parties involved, ever sought permission to even use the sample. He’s suing for an injunction against Tank from being able to continue to distribute and profit off the alleged infringing song, $150k in damages per infringement and attorney fees.
From what we can hear, there are definitely similarities. We’ll let you be the judge though…
Take a listen below.
We hope it all works out for the best.
