We probably don’t think about it enough, but internet security is incredibly important in these times, particularly since our phones hold so much of our information and our personal data. More than 1 in 3 Americans have been hacked or had their identity stolen according to a survey by OnePoll.  The reality is that even with all the improvements phone companies have made, there is not enough attention paid to internet security.

The black market has been hacking data for companies and individuals for years now.  It has definitely ramped up in the last few years with major companies having to pay millions in order to get their information back.  Companies like T-Mobile and Turbo Tax have reported high level hacks so you can only imagine the risk your personal data might be under.  Buying and selling personal information is big business—and unless you take precautions, your data may be at risk. Once your data is compromised, it can be difficult to completely recover.

One in four people would be willing to buy back their private information from the black market, according to new research from the same survey as above.  Don’t find yourself in that position.

One of the best ways for individuals to protect their data is by getting a VPN.  VPN stands for “Virtual Private Network” and is an opportunity to establish a protected network connection when using public networks. VPNs encrypt your internet traffic and disguise your online identity. This makes it more difficult for third parties or hackers to track your activities online and steal data. The encryption takes place in real time. PrivacySharks can provide a VPN for your phone VPN, providing the best iPhone VPNs.

A VPN basically disguises your browsing data so that people on the outside have no idea what it is your actively doing on the internet.  It hides your IP address by letting the network redirect it through a specially configured remote server run by a VPN host.

Here are some more things to consider if you want to protect your data:

  1. Use a password manager to diversify your login info across all accounts
  2. Change your passwords every couple years to switch things up
  3. Reduce your exposure to data breaches by eliminating unnecessary digital accounts
  4. Add identity theft monitoring services and identity theft insurance
