What is a VPN?

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network. It extends a private network across a public network and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network.  It offers security, safety, and possible encryption.  There are different types of VPN connections and different classifications, but this isn’t that article.  This is more of a general introduction to provide understanding.

You can use a VPN for regular web usage or for any other team or workplace yesterday.  And if the question is if you should use a VPN when streaming then that’s a good use as well.

Is A VPN right for you?

Even if you are using a private browsing system or if you go incognito on your browser, whoever you use as your internet service provider—Comcast, Spectrum, Verizon. etc, can access all your internet data. Your provider can see when, where and how you browse.  So even if you are just browsing at home, you might still want a VPN.

As mentioned before, if you are using public wi-fi then you should definitely consider a VPN to keep your information private.  Many times we check our online banking accounts or put in our passwords to our CashApp or Venmo, or even check our stocks.  Each of these include sensitive data that you probably want to keep private to make sure you don’t get hacked.  That’s why you should use a virtual private network.

VPNs are generally monthly investments, but its not going to cost you much.  You can even find a good service for less than $10 a month.
