Nicki Minaj has had quite a week — first, news went out that her and Kenneth Petty (her husband) are soon expecting a second child together — now, the Young Money star has taken the title from the legendary Missy Elliott as the longest-charting female hip hop artist on the Billboard Hot 100. Prior to Minaj edging out the “Lose Control” spitter on New Year’s Day (Jan 1), the ladies had been tied for the prestigious accolade. “Super Freaky Girl” is the song that warranted Minaj the record, which on this week’s Hot 100 sits at No. 51.
“Super Freaky Girl” has held steady on the Hot 100 for 5 months (20 weeks), and in August 2022 peaked at No. 1. Chart Data tweeted: “@NickiMinaj becomes the female rapper with the most consecutive years charting a single on the Hot 100 (2010 – 2023) breaking a tie with Missy Elliott (1996* – 2008).” “Super Freaky Girl” also became the first female solo hip hop song to debut at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill’s smash “Doo Wop (That Thing)” (1998)—which made chart history.
After Nicki Minaj took home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV VMAs last year, Missy Elliot saluted her by tweeting: “Congratulations to @NICKIMINAJ on this achievement!” The “Up All Night” collaborator show love back to Elliot by tweeting: “Mumbling & cackling??? nah omg thank you Missy. You kicked down this [door]. Nothing but Love & Respect for your iconic artistry. #VMAs #NickiVmas #VideoVanguard.” The Virginia native was the first female emcee to be honored with the Video Vanguard Award back in 2019.
With Nicki Minaj becoming the Billboard Hot 100‘s longest-charting female rapper, it now adds fuel to ongoing debate of whether or not Cardi B can hold a torch to her. To date, Cardi has: 6 Guinness World Records, has the most #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 (five), the first female rapper to achieve a RIAA diamond-certified song, has the most songs with a billion streams for a female hip hop artist on Spotify, and is the only solo female artist to win a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
In 2022, @NICKIMINAJ became the first female rapper in history to debut multiple songs at #1 on the Hot 100.
