Judge Mathis Canceled By Warner Bros. After More Than 20 Seasons
After spending more than 20 seasons on daytime television, Warner Bros. has canceled both Judge Mathis and The People’s Court.
The People’s Court will end with season 26 and and Judge Mathis will end with season 24. Judge Mathis premiered back in 1999, while The People’s Court premiered in 1997.
Judge Greg Mathis has been dishing out sentences and calling people “crackheads” for nearly 25 years in his courtroom. In courtroom TV history, Judge Mathis is the second-longest judge to serve (behind Judge Judy, better known as Judge Judith Sheindlin). Prior to being canceled, Judge Mathis was the longest-running African American male host in TV history.
In 2018, the famed judicial show also became the first court television series with an African American magistrate to win a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Courtroom/Legal Program.

Meanwhile, The People’s Court debuted in 1981 with Judge Joseph Wapner and ran until 1993. The court show was rebooted in 1997 and former Florida prosecutor Marilyn Milian took over the gavel.
The People’s Court sees Judge Marilyn Milian overseeing authentic small-claims cases in court. Milian made history by being the first Hispanic magistrate to host a nationally broadcasted court show on TV.
The People’s Court has secured 4 Outstanding Courtroom/Legal Program Daytime Emmy Awards (the most wins in the class for a legal show) and has received a total of 12 nominations.
The People’s Court is the first long-running, celebrated reality show in the history of court television. It also became the first tribunal show to utilize binding arbitrement after ushering in the format in 1981.
The daytime syndication terrain is pretty rocky at this point as a result of daunting market conditions, which has called for the cancellation of numerous daytime shows such as Judge Mathis, The People’s Court, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dr. Phil, The Real, Dr. Oz, and others.
