Kerry Washington in UnPrisoned is what we’ve all been waiting for! The celebrated actress’ latest project premieres Friday (March 10) on the Hulu Network.
Washington not only stars in the comedy-drama, but she’s also an executive producer. The series synopsis reads: a messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom’s life is turned right-side-up when her dad gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son.
“Kerry Washington shines in a dramedy from award-winning TV writer and relationship expert Tracy McMillan, who based the series on incidents in her own life. Washington is Paige, a single mom with a social-media platform whose life gets messier when her career-criminal father Edwin (Delroy Lindo) is released from prison and moves in with her and her teenage son (Faly Rakotohavana). Theirs is a fraught relationship, but as Edwin tries to go straight and reconnect with his family, the setbacks and triumphs feel real and earned. All eight episodes are available for binge-watching,” says TV journalist Matt Roush.
Unprisoned was created by Tracy McMillan (Mad Men) and mimics the writer’s real-life experiences growing up with an imprisoned father.

UnPrisoned is the first scripted sitcom from the Onyx Collective (launched in 2021 by Disney).
Washington said about the series, “If there’s a story about a Black character, a lot of that time gets spent explaining Blackness, defining Blackness, interpreting Blackness for your co-collaborators. When you have more than one Black voice at the table, you get to sort of acknowledge the Blackness, celebrate the Blackness, and also go deeper into the human-ness.”
The Scandal star went on, “In this country, there are 80 million people living with a criminal record. And for each one of those people, there’s a circle of loved ones around them. And all of those people are impacted by the criminal justice system.”
She added, “There are lots of stories about people going into prison, lots of stories about what it’s like in prison—but to excavate this story of what it is like to come out and try to really free yourself, not just your body but your mind and your heart.”
