So many of us are guilty of wondering — how did Coolio die?
According to a coroner’s report shared by the Los Angeles rhymer’s family, Coolio passed away from a fentanyl overdose.
The “Gangsta’s Paradise” hitmaker’s loved ones’ spokesman Jarel “Jarez” Posey relayed to TMZ on Thursday afternoon (April 6) that they had heard from the coroner who explained that Coolio’s demise was due to a cocktail of drugs.
In addition to fentanyl, the legendary lyricist also reportedly had a mix of heroin and methamphetamines in his system.
The coroner also believed that his long habit of smoking cigarettes and severe asthma played a role in his body’s inability to fight back leading to his tragic death.
Coolio (born name Artis Leon Ivey Jr.) died discovered unconscious inside a friend’s home in Los Angeles.

Paramedics arrived minutes later and pronounced him dead at the scene. At the time, paramedics believe he suffered a cardiac arrest. No drugs or paraphernalia were reportedly found surrounding him.
Coolio’s seven children plan to keep his legacy alive through an array of film and documentary projects in the near future.
In December, The Blast reported that the “Fantastic Voyage” rapper’s $300,000 estate would be split between all of his children since he didn’t leave a will behind.
Coolio’s unexpected death sent shock-waves through the Hip Hop community, with 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, LL COOL J and many more paying their respects.
His seven children began designing pendants to be filled with their father’s ashes. A report revealed the rest of Coolio’s ashes were to be put into an urn after all of the necklaces were filled — which included additional family members outside of the kids.
Coolio had major plans to close out 2022 prior to his untimely passing. He was on the verge of finalizing a deal for a Las Vegas residency, where he was set to headline 10 shows at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino starting in late October and running through mid-November.
He was also preparing to bring his “Kwanzaa-bot” character back for Futurama‘s forthcoming revival on Hulu. With his lines and a few bars already recorded, the show will move forward with the character’s return and will dedicate the episode to Coolio’s memory.
