Presently hairstyles for people of color are being criticized in the work place. Some have even lost their jobs due to their unique hairstyles. This has long been the case for Black people in America, but it’s even more alarming because it is STILL happening, even in 2024.

There are many different hairstyles for black women that we’ve seen perfected throughout the years. Many Black women wear their hair either in dreadlocks, afros, twists, braids, laced wigs and some may even be bold enough to wear a fade. These hairstyles represent our historical culture and who we are as individuals. Without allowing us to indulge in the representation of our hair can make us feel slightly distanced from who we are.

Young Boy Gets Suspended From Texas School

Recently, an 18 year old was suspended from school because his locs were “too long”. Darryl George, has been banned by BHISD from attending regular classes at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu. He has been directed to in-school suspension and an off-site disciplinary program since Aug. 31, 2023, according to his mother Darresha George.

What seems to be a natural hairstyle for us can be unacceptable in the public eye. In regards to the letter that was received by his parents, from the school, it stated that the young man repeatedly violated the dress code. According to the school, the dress code states that there is a certain length the male hair should be. Understanding the cause of the suspension, his mother filed a civil lawsuit against the school and the Governor of Texas.

The decision by the school would appear to be a violation of The Crown Act, which Texas has adopted.  However, the judge sided with the school district, back on February 22nd. The decision sets a dangerous precedent.

In all, as people of color we should have the freedom to wear our hair however we want without being ridiculed by others. Unfortunately, this is a battle that we have to continue to fight.

So whether your hair is in locs, in a afro, braided, twisted or you may even decide to try a Nadula bob wig!  Either way, wear it PROUDLY & UNAPOLOGECTICALLY!
