The Rise of Brooklyn Emcee, Desiigner

“Panda,” the debut commercial single from rapper Desiigner, which initially dropped back in December 2015, now holds the record for highest number of streams for a song by a rapper over a seven day period. The Brooklyn, New York, native – who actually grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant – has already performed the smash platinum hit anthem everywhere from high profile television vehicles; The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and The Wendy Williams Show to the stages of The Bad Boy Reunion Show and Hot 97’s Summer Jam. Queen Bey has even been dancing to the popular ditty along different stops of her mega-successful Formation World Tour. In addition, he is currently signed to Kanye West’s – who also makes a cameo in the ultra popular video clip for the song – GOOD Music roster, where he’s presently gearing up for the forthcoming release of his eagerly awaited solo effort, The Life of Desiigner. To say that PANDAmonium is in full effect would be a gross understatement!

Born Sidney Royel Selby III, Dezolo, as he was then known, had his first foray into music courtesy of the church choir where he first practiced honing his vocals. As he became more and more comfortable with his burgeoning skill set, Designer Royel – another moniker he utilized early on – soon began crafting tracks that would eventually make there way onto both his YouTube and SoundCloud pages. One of those in particular, “Zombie Walk,” became his “official” first offering. At the urging of his sister who insisted he drop his middle name and add the extra “i,” Desiigner followed with the subsequent unveiling of “Panda”.  The rest, as it is said, is history… still in the making.

Following his inking to West’s GOOD Music imprint, Desiigner would later appear on a pair of tracks; “Pt. 2” and “Freestyle 4,” from Kanye’s seventh album, The Life of Pablo. He also is featured alongside Quavo, Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Big Sean and Yo Gotti on the recently unleashed “Champions,” taken from the upcoming Cruel Winter project.

Super-producer Mike Dean, a well known Kanye West collaborator, recently announced that he is executive producing Desiigner’s debut album.

Although the 19 year-old rapper hails from the East Coast, his musical style is heavily influenced by Down South Hip-Hop, largely “trap music,” even garnering him comparisons to that of ATL based Future. On said comparisons, Desiigner told Complex, “God gave him a blessing, but he gave me a blessing, too. I ain’t gonna doubt the man’s music. He make beautiful music, too. Music is made every day. Big ups to him, big ups to Future. I actually like Future’s music. I like his music, you feel me. I’m not a hater or a critic on him, you know, I do me. God bless him, God bless me.”

Time will tell if Desiigner continues to be blessed, particularly after The Life of Desiigner hits stores.
