American Values – Where They Really Stand (Toni vs. Snooki)

Toni Morrison is one of the most empowering women in literature of the 21st century.  Her novels Beloved, The Bluest Eye, Love, Jazz, and Paradise make the audience face such themes as child molestation, rape, incest, murder, love, slavery, letting go and finding peace.  Many students have studied her work through high school and college.  Her words are of so much wisdom and value that it seems impossible to put a price on them.
Rutgers University seems to think that Ms. Morrison’s words are worth a lot less than that of those of someone whose inspiring words include “ When I say I’m ready to go wild, I’m gonna go wild.”  Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is most famous for being one of the members of the MTV cast of “The Jersey Shore,” a show so vile that one might feel the need to shower after viewing.  Snooki’s various antics on the show include getting punched in the face, taking pride in getting drunk and hooking up, and having an affinity for pickles.
Snooki was paid $32,000 by Rutgers University to speak to students all about being a guido and her GTL lifestyle.  (GTL being “Gym. Tan. Laundry.).   While the fact that Ms. Polizzi has a book on the New York Times Bestseller List, she is far from the literary genius that Toni Morrison remains.  Rutgers found it appropriate to pay the MTV star $2,000 more than the Noble Prize winner to speak at the university.  What has America become when we value the words of a young woman with no self respect more than someone who actually forces her audience to think.

What a show of American Values am I right?
