Idris Elba to Play Leading Role in Netflix’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Idris Elba is heating up the scene, on and off camera. The 45-year-old English actor is set to star in, direct, and produce the forthcoming modern-day retelling of Victor Hugo’s 1831 French novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix, Variety confirms.
Based on the celebrated gothic romance tale, the film follows Quasimodo (portrayed by Elba), a barely verbal and half-blind hunchback, who falls for a beautiful Gypsy by the name of Esmeralda.
Over the years, the classic story has been very popular for its many adaptions, the most-known version being Disney’s 1996 animated film, which featured the voices of Demi Moore and Kevin Kline.
Playwright Michael Mitnick (The Current War) will write the retelling for Netflix, while Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones will produce for Automatik, alongside Elba and Green Door’s Ana Garanito.
Elba will also produce the music for the project.
