Revisiting The XXL 2015 Freshman – Their Success & Where Are They Now?

K Camp

K Camp emerged on the scene in 2014 with his debut EP, Due Time.  Signed to Interscope Records, things moved quickly for him with the XXL cover coming to start 2015 and his debut album dropping that September.  Only Way Is Up featured the hit single, “Comfortable”.

Where Are They Now?

Camp went through some issues with his publishing company, which caused him to slow down his run early on.  His sophomore album Rare Sound didn’t come out until 3 years after his first as a result of those issues.  No notable hits resulted from that project.

His 2019 single, “Lottery (Renegade)” went viral on Tik Tok.  That helped lead the way for his 2020 album Kiss Five, the fifth installment of the series.

His label, Rare Sound released a collaborative project titled Rare Family later in 2020, introducing fans to the other members of his team.

Most recently, K Camp released the single, “Game Ain’t Free,” currently a stand along single. So far the song has performed extremely well.

Vince Staples

California native, Vince Staples came to early prominence with the help of features with some other well known names in the industry, including Odd Future and Mac Miller.  Early mixtapes helped him build a buzz, which reached a fever pitch in 2014.  At the end of the year he released his Hell Can Wait EP. The following year Staples revealed his debut album, Summertime ’06, which featured the single “Senorita”.  He released the album just after it was announced that he would be on the 2015 XXL Freshman Cover.  Staples is signed to Motown Records and Talib Kweli’s Blacksmith Records.

In 2017 Vince released his sophomore album, Big Fish Theory.  A third album was released in 2018, titled, FM!  The album featured 11 tracks but was only 22 minutes long.

Where Are They Now?

In July 2021, Vince Staples released his fourth album, his self-titled project.  The album was just 10 tracks long and curiously, also only 22 minutes long.  The album features the singles, “Law of Averages” and “Are You with That?”
