Best Rap Album — arguably the most esteemed award category of them all — was won by living hip hop legend Kendrick Lamar at the 2023 Grammy Awards. His album “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” beat out the likes of “God Did” (DJ Khaled), “I Never Liked You” (Future), “It’s Almost Dry” (Pusha T), and “Come Home the Kids Miss You” (Jack Harlow). Lamar was nominated in two other categories as well and the star took home three trophies when the night was said and done. It was during the Grammys Premiere Ceremony that two of the “Rich Spirit” hit makers wins were announced.

Kendrick Lamar locked down the award for Best Rap Song (“The Heart Part 5”), beating out songs by Gunna, Jack Harlow, Future and DJ Khaled. The track also earned the Compton native the award for Best Rap Performance. The Best Rap Album award at the 2023 Grammy Awards was presented by Cardi B, and after taking the stage “The Recipe” rapper gave thanks to “the culture” for giving him the chance to “evolve” and birth “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.”

The Top Dawg artist began his acceptance speech: “First and foremost, I wanna thank my family for giving me the courage and the vulnerability to share these stories and to share my truth with this album. That’s first and foremost. I wanna thank my fans for trusting me with these words. You know as artists, we all entertainers, stupid. And we say things to provoke thoughts and feelings and emotions. So making this record was one of my toughest records to make; and it allowed me to do that and it allowed me to share other people’s experiences.”

The “Loyalty” spitter went on: “So going back and thinking back where I started with rap and how far it’s came, I would like to thank the culture for allowing me to evolve in order to make a song like ‘Mother I Sober.’ That’s special to me. All we ever wanted was to be the biggest underground artist of all time. And I finally found imperfection with this album so I appreciate y’all. I love y’all.” As far as total Grammy wins, Kendrick Lamar has won a total of 16 gold trophies.
