Erica Mena and Safaree met while filming VH1’s Scared Famous in 2017.

In 2017, VH1 premiered their short-lived reality series, Scared Famous. The competition show followed 10 reality stars living in a spooky mansion together as they participated in creepy challenges for $100,000. It featured a then-Love & Hip Hop: New York’s Erica and Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood’s Safaree, who formed a bond while in the house.

Rumors of the two dating started to swirl in 2018.

In November 2018, TMZ broke the story that Erica and Safaree were spotted hand-in-hand in matching coats at the Jazz vs. Nets game in Brooklyn, New York that year. According to the outlet, sources close to the duo revealed that they’d been dating for a little while but hadn’t reached boyfriend/girlfriend status yet.

Safaree proposed to Erica Mena on Christmas Eve 2018.

On December 24, 2018, Safaree popped the big question on Erica. As reported by TMZ, the rapper/producer asked for her hand in marriage at her Atlanta home around friends and family. Allegedly, Safaree dropped $175,000 on the engagement ring, and Trax NYC was responsible for helping him design the 14-carat platinum rock.

The couple confirmed they were expecting their first child together in 2019.

Erica and Safaree shocked the world when they unveiled that they had a bun in the oven! Although, at the time, Erica already had a preteen son from a previous relationship, this marked the couple’s first child together and Safaree’s introduction to fatherhood.

Safaree and Erica Mena tied the knot in October 2019.

Erica and Safaree had a lavish wedding on October 7, 2019. The ceremony took place at The Legacy Castle in Pequannock, New Jersey.

Erica Mena gave birth to their daughter in 2020.

On February 3, 2020, Erica and Safaree welcomed their baby girl, Safire. Before the birth, Safaree expressed to E! News, “I’m in shock. I’m in disbelief. It’s very surreal to me [that I’m going to be a dad].”

Trouble arose after Erica Mena and Safaree adjusted to their new life together.

Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Erica and Safaree seemingly saw a disconnect in their relationship. Erica expressed that she had begun to feel neglected by her husband.

Additionally, Safaree came under fire for tweeting that getting married was a “mistake” that would “never happen again.”

Erica Mena filed for divorce from Safaree in 2021.

After less than two years of marriage, Erica filed for divorce from Safaree in Georgia’s Fayette County Superior Court on May 24, 2021. According to documents obtained by Page Six, Erica referred to their union as “irretrievably broken” with “no hope of reconciliation” in court documents.

The Samuels’ second child was born amid divorce in 2021.

Safaree and his estranged wife, Erica’s, son, Legend, came into the world on June 28, 2021. Erica first revealed her second pregnancy during an episode of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.

Erica Mena and Safaree’s heart-to-heart brought us all to tears in 2022.

 

If you didn’t know, Erica and Safaree’s marriage didn’t exactly end at the divorce filing in 2021, specifically since Safree previously refused to sign the breakup papers. On Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, we saw Erica finally reaching her most vulnerable point when she explained to Safaree how badly he had hurt her throughout their turbulent relationship.

Safaree has to pay child support following divorce finalization.

In September 2022, TMZ exclusively shared that Safaree and Erica Mena’s divorce had been finalized on the 12th through arbitration. However, along with legally calling it quits, Safaree was slapped with a $4,305 monthly fee for child support.

Fast forward to 2024, in early July, the exes had it out on social media after Erica accused her ex-husband of not being present in their children’s lives.
