It seems like the chances of getting a black James Bond may actually be higher than we might have thought.  The decision makers behind the franchise are said to be considering Idris Elba for the role.

In a report by The Daily Star, director Antoine Fuqua revealed that the Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli feels “it is time” for an ethnic minority actor to star as 007. He went on to say, “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

It does sound gimmicky, and Idris Elba might be too old, but having a black James Bond will be like Barack Obama getting elected as the 44th president of the United States. The Bond movie franchise started in 1962, based on a novel by Ian Fleming, and 24 movies later it continues to cast a white male as James Bond.

James Bond movies are known for their overt action scenes, the femme fatale and the James Bond Character: a slick, charming, cool under pressure guy.

The current Bond, Daniel Craig, is finishing his role with one last movie set to be released in 2019. Craig has already played the iconic role four times in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.

This change to a black James Bond would be major, if it happens. England has already seen a Muslim mayor of its capital city and a Black woman (Meghan Markle) married into the royal family. Maybe it is time for a black James Bond as well.
