The first time I heard of Sinéad Harnett was a couple of weeks ago while searching for new soul artists to listen to. Harnett is an English singer and songwriter born in London, England, by an Irish father and a Thai mother. She is blessed with the voice of an angel. Harnett first made an appearance on the music scene in 2011 after being selected by grime artist Wiley. Harnett was chosen by Wiley to be featured on his single “Walk Away” from his 2012 album “Chill Out Album”.
Having such a powerful voice, Sinéad Harnett was also selected to be acknowledged for her amazing singing skills. In 2013 Billboard stated, “Harnett’s rich, soulful voice and range has drawn comparisons to Adele, her recordings are more experimental and contemporary—a brand of jazz-tinged, melodic electronic pop a bit reminiscent of Jessie Ware or Jhené Aiko.”
Afterward, Harnett went on to release her debut single “Got Me” with Black Butter Records the following year. She then followed up with her single in August of 2014 by releasing her debut EP N.O.W. The album was released by 333 Records and contains her single “No Other Way” which went on to be named the track of the week by The Guardian.
Since then Harnett has released a new E.P every year as well as hit singles. Her debut album Lessons In Love was released September 20, 2019, and featured hit singles such as “By Myself”, “Leo Bear”, and “Pulling Away”. In an interview with complex Harnett speaks on the single “Leo Bear” to explain her inspiration for writing the song. She says, “Though there are somber experiences I’ve written about, my nephew gave me light to share with this one. I don’t know what it is, but sadness is such an inspiring place for me to write from. Maybe it’s because I need the therapy from it, or maybe it’s because that’s the type of music that moves me the most… It’s just what naturally provokes me. With ‘Leo Bear’, contrastingly, I was in utter euphoria. I’d never had a baby in the family, nor been an auntie before, and I felt a type of love I hadn’t ever felt. I’m just so happy he exists.”
In regard to everything going on in the world during the pandemic Sinéad Harnett released a live performance of her song “Quarantine Queen”. You can watch the video below:
In May 2021 Sinéad Harnett unveiled her sophomore album, Ready Is Always Too Late, featuring eleven songs. The album features the singles “Take Me Away” featuring EARTHGANG, “Stickin'” featuring Masego and VanJes, and “Hard 4 Me 2 Love You” among others.
